When there’s no one else there’s NODAC
The work of a Soul Midwife may begin from the point of diagnosis and continue until the end of life, with encouragement and support to prepare for the end of life by living fully today.
Soul Midwives always work from the heart and offer time and support to the person who is dying and their family members. Soul Midwives place the needs of the family at the centre of the conversation and offer tender loving care at all times during time together.
Soul Midwives can offer a range of gentle therapies to soothe and reassure the family members of someone who is in palliative care while also being skilled advocates for a person’s dying wishes. Soul Midwives see death as a time that is sacred and believe people should have as much love and support as possible. Death will come to each of us at some point. We have one chance to get it right, both for the person nearing the end of life and for the family and friends.
Soul Midwives welcome the kind of conversations that a person may not be able to have with anyone else but which feel important. These conversations may happen with the any member of the family at any time. Conversations are led by a person’s thoughts and feelings and partnered by a Soul Midwife who offers presence and deep listening at a time when it is needed the most.
Soul Midwives always enter a conversation with good intentions to support a person and maintain a focus on what a person wants to talk about while navigating the conversation with gentle curiosity so together a conversation can flow in the same way that we sway with the rhythm of the music and in time with the beat of a heart.
Soul Midwives come with a toolkit of gentle therapeutic techniques for people who are journeying towards the end of life and their family members. Depending on the wishes of an individual these may include – voice, oils, movement, breathing exercises, aromatherapy, gentle touch, chanting, offering prayer and prose, relaxation, and meditation. Or simply sitting together in held kindness. All of these old ancient therapies bring a sense of calm, can reduce heart rates, ease fear and holistically support the nervous system.
If you feel called to pursue a path of companionship at the end of life, please see the Tender Loving Care; Caring for the dying Education course page. This is where you can take your first step towards becoming a Soul Midwife by completing the one day training and following up with Level 1 & Level 2 Soul Midwifery training with Felicity Warner at the School of Soul Midwives, Dorset.
