What is Soul Midwifery?

Soul Midwives are non-medical, holistic companions who guide and support either a person in palliative care or their loved ones in order to facilitate a gentle and peaceful death.

The work of a Soul Midwife may begin from the point of diagnosis and continue until the end of life, with encouragement and support to prepare for the end of life by living fully today.

Soul Midwives always work from the heart and offer time and support to the person who is dying and their family members. Soul Midwives place the needs of the family at the centre of the conversation and offer tender loving care at all times during time together.

NODAC - Soul Midwifery

Soul Midwives can offer a range of gentle therapies to soothe and reassure the family members of someone who is in palliative care while also being skilled advocates for a person’s dying wishes. Soul Midwives see death as a time that is sacred and believe people should have as much love and support as possible. Death will come to each of us at some point. We have one chance to get it right, both for the person nearing the end of life and for the family and friends.

How can a Soul Midwife help?

Assist with Advance Care Planning:

Advance Care Planning can make the difference between a future where a person makes their own decisions and a future where others do. The more somebody plans now – the more information others have to ensure a person’s wishes are upheld. Advance Care Planning helps to support a better quality of life. No One Dies Alone offers creative ways of planning for the end of life through art, contemplation, writing, video and audio diaries, movement and journaling that are spoken about with family.

Deep listening & conversation:

Soul Midwives welcome the kind of conversations that a person may not be able to have with anyone else but which feel important. These conversations may happen with the any member of the family at any time. Conversations are led by a person’s thoughts and feelings and partnered by a Soul Midwife who offers presence and deep listening at a time when it is needed the most.

Soul Midwives always enter a conversation with good intentions to support a person and maintain a focus on what a person wants to talk about while navigating the conversation with gentle curiosity so together a conversation can flow in the same way that we sway with the rhythm of the music and in time with the beat of a heart.

Use holistic techniques to comfort and reassure:

Soul Midwives come with a toolkit of gentle therapeutic techniques for people who are journeying towards the end of life and their family members. Depending on the wishes of an individual these may include – voice, oils, movement, breathing exercises, aromatherapy, gentle touch, chanting, offering prayer and prose, relaxation, and meditation. Or simply sitting together in held kindness. All of these old ancient therapies bring a sense of calm, can reduce heart rates, ease fear and holistically support the nervous system.

Hold bedside vigils:

Soul Midwives help a family to fulfil a person’s dying wish by holding a sacred space by the bedside of a person who is dying. Soul Midwives help to create a calm, peaceful, loving space for a person to let go and surrender to the dying process and for the family to feel supported through this sad time. We also support families who may wish to facilitate this on behalf of their loved one. Some people choose to have their favourite photos, pictures, flowers, colours or talisman near them. Soul Midwives help to create a loving space with personal touches to help guide a person home.

Advocating for a person at the end of life:

Part of a Soul Midwive’s role may be to attend medical appointments and social or family engagements. Soul Midwives are impartial, yet loving, support and are your companion so members of the family are not alone. We can also help in researching anything related to death and dying including family-run funeral homes, ethical solicitors, natural burial sites, celebrants and financial support. Soul midwives help to problem solve these important life questions so that a person can enjoy living life to the best each day.

Leaving a lasting legacy:

Leaving a lasting legacy means leaving something that will be valued and treasured after a person’s death. This could be a recipe book of your favorite family meals, memory journals, audio or video recordings, a handwritten poem or letter. These are just a few of the wonderful ways Soul Midwives can work together to create a lasting legacy. Everyone can be involved and the process is often one of healing and connection and helps to support the person who is dying and their family.
