No One Dies Alone Cornwall is a specialist provider of the quality training course, ‘Tender Loving Care’ which is presented in association with Felicity Warner of the, The Soul Midwives’ School, Dorset. 

Fully trained Soul Midwives, Anna Sadler and Liz Bateman facilitate this high-quality retreat & training in Devoran, near Truro in Cornwall. Together, they provide holistic approaches to palliative and end-of-life care. By holistic, they mean – taking a person-centered approach to meet the emotional, social, cultural and spiritual well-being of people nearing the end of life and their families. 

Course Delivery:

No One Dies Alone Cornwall believes that this sensitive training in ‘palliative & end-of-life care’ requires an extra special setting in which to learn.

The full day of training  (10.00am – 4:30pm with the option to stay longer to sit together around a fire). The retreat day takes place in a tranquil retreat setting and provides a space for contemplation, time for self-care and the opportunity to relax and unwind.

The cost of the day includes a homemade, organic lunch and refreshments alongside a take home self-care gift bag.

Who is the Retreat for?

The Tender Loving Care Retreat is for anyone who has an interest in End of Life Care, for people who are caring for a loved one, for independent carers working in the community and for care support staff working in care homes or community settings as well as for those who feel called to this type of work and would like to train as a Soul Midwife/ End of Life Doula. This is a certified course which is both endorsed and recognised (see below). A certificate is presented for those who are interested.

Course Outline:

The Tender Loving Care Training course provides learners with a practical & holistic toolbox on ways to care for someone who is palliative or at the end of life. This TLC retreat teaches holistic support to manage pain and discomfort, which is non-medical, and which can be implemented with immediate effect at home or at work.

This Retreat also offers time for self-care and an opportunity to recharge and relax. Anna and Liz hold a sacred space by which to learn & bring their experience of this Soulful work along with their heartfelt guidance on ways to bring TLC to oneself.

Course Content:

The Tender Loving Care Training comprises 4 mandatory modules (see below) which are woven into a truly relaxing day full of nurturing self-care, mindfulness and time for contemplation and connection. 

  • 4 stages of dying (an holistic approach)

Understand the symptoms related to the 4 stages of dying (a non-medical approach of the dying process) & learn how to support an individual’s needs during each stage to provide comfort and reassurance. 

  • Gentle and soothing touch in palliative care

Learn how to provide holistic care to comfort & reassure a person who may be experiencing pain and/or emotional distress.

  • Deep listening with contemplation and mindfulness

Recognise the importance of deep listening and good communication skills as part of the holistic care of a person. Learn how to answer sensitive questions to provide emotional and spiritual support.  

  • How to facilitate a bedside vigil

Recognise the importance of delivering high quality care in the last days of life advocating for a person-centred and holistic approach.

Progression opportunities:

By undertaking the Tender Loving Care Certificate Training, learners will be eligible to take the next steps to becoming a fully trained Soul Midwife and complete Level 1 & Level 2 with Felicity Warner of The Soul Midwives School.

For anyone who feels they can sit with someone who is dying and alone and witness their final journey, this Tender Loving Care Retreat Training enables a person to be part of the Death Doula Den and become a volunteer companion to help NODAC provide support to people who would otherwise be alone.

Training options:

The learning materials include a Tender Loving Care Training manual with information on what has been learnt as well as a booklist for furthering knowledge and understanding. A certificate is presented upon completion of all 4 modules.

Recognition:

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines palliative care as “…….correct assessment and treatment of pain & other problems including; physical, psychosocial & Spiritual. 
  • The TLC training is a simplified, hands-on version of Soul Midwifery, which sits perfectly within mainstream care settings and statutory services.
  •  In 2019 it was implemented by Dorset NHS, where it is being offered to all End of Life patients within the county’s community hospitals and received positive and uplifting feedback.

Background information about the course:

This award winning programme was developed by Felicity Warner who is the director of the Soul Midwives School in Dorset. Felicity has written a number of books on the subject. She is the Author of ‘Gentle Dying’, ‘A Safe Journey Home’, ‘The Soul Midwives’ Handbook’ and ‘Sacred Oils’. She was also awarded Care Champion of the Year in 2017 by the National Council for Palliative Care and Royal College of Nursing, Felicity was also named End of Life Doula of 2017 by the Good Funeral Awards. Felicity was awarded End of Life Care Champion of the year in 2017 by the National Council for Palliative care.
